Two food outlets at Nanyang Technological University, Long John Silver’s and The House Steamboat Restaurant, have had their licences suspended for food hygiene lapses and failure to register assistants.

The restaurants, fast food chain Long John Silver’s and The House Steamboat Restaurant, are both situated at the North Spine Plaza, a popular dining spot among students.

The restaurants have had their licenses suspended for two weeks and were each fined $800. They each had accumulated 12 demerit points over the past year.

The House Steamboat Restaurant received six demerit points for preparing food on the floor of its premises and six for failure to register an assistant.

Under SFA rules, food handlers working in food retail establishments must be registered with the agency. A food handler is any person who handles and prepares food and beverages in SFA-licensed food retail establishments. These are chefs, sous chefs, cooks, kitchen assistants and food stall assistants.

Long John Silver’s, meanwhile received six demerit points for selling food containing foreign matter and another six for failure to register an assistant.

Its licence has been suspended from June 4 to June 17.

An NTU spokesperson told TODAY on Friday (June 14) that the university takes a serious view of the licence suspensions.

The spokesperson said: “We have issued a stern written warning to the two errant food operators. They are taking the necessary corrective action to ensure that they comply with SFA regulations, failing which their lease may be terminated by the University.”

NTU’s leasing officers will continue to conduct spot checks and meet regularly with all operators to remind them of the importance of upholding food safety, hygiene and sanitation, the spokesperson added.

TODAY has reached out to both The House Steamboat Restaurant and Long John Silver’s for comment.
