06/01/18: Caviar and Roe Recall in Canada for Possible Botulism Updated For the Third Time

Imperial-Caviar-Salmon-Roe-Botulism-RecallThe food recall warnings that were issued last month by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) for Imperial Caviar & Seafood brand Whitefish Roe and VIP Caviar Club brand Salmon Roe are being updated for the third time. These products may be contaminated with botulism toxin, which can cause serious illness and death. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this recall.

These recalled products include VIP Caviar Club Salmon Roe in 50 gram packages, with UPC number 1 86866 90024 8 and product codes 27017-02 BB: 27-SEP-18. Also recalled is VIP Caviar Club Salmon Roe in 50 gram packages, with UPC number 1 86866 90024 8 and product codes 19417-01 BB: 13-07-2018. Finally, Imperial Caviar and Seafood Whitefish Roe in 50 gram packages is recalled. That product has the UPC number 1 86866 90027 9 and product codes 17917-02 BB: 28-JUN-2018. These products were sold in Ontario and Quebec at the retail level.

The products may permit the growth of Clostridium botulinum bacteria, which produce the deadly toxin. The symptoms of botulism food poisoning include facial paralysis, loss of facial expression, fixed or unreactive pupils, difficulty swallowing, drooping eyelids, blurred or double vision, difficulty speaking, slurred speech, and a change in the sound of the voice. The paralysis produced by the toxin gradually progresses downward, causing an inability to breathe. You cannot see, taste, or smell botulism toxin and it will not change the texture of the product.

The recall was triggered by CFIA inspection activities. More products may be recalled.

If you bought these products, do not eat them. Throw them away in a double bagged or sealed container, and then put them into a secure garbage can. You can also return these products to the place of purchase for a full refund.
