09/12/09: Best Organic Whole Foods

Most of us are so busy nowaday, it can be a daunting task just figuring out what to make for dinner let alone having to think about how healthy it is and whether or not the medical or food safety industry is going to tell you that all the thing you have been eating all these years are suddenly not fit for human consumption.

One thing that is starting to make people think about the food they consume is organic foods. Health food addicts have known for years the benefits that come from eating naturally non-pesticide laced foods. If we are starting to take a more conscious approach to our diets, introducing organic foods or replacing pesticide-laced foods can be a health breakthrough for many of us.

The question is; are there any organic foods that are just not worth buying? What really is an organic food, and exactly how can I assure my family and myself that what we are consuming and buying are truly organic? More than 40 countries in the world regulate the labelling of organic foods. In Canada for example, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency states that each food product that is labelled organic must contain at least 95 per cent organic ingredients. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has also introduced a phase-in period for these new regulations; these new regulations must be entirely in place by December 2008. Experts have stated that there are some organic foods that you need not purchase, as they are just as healthy in their traditional state as they are in an organic state.

Therefore, as you can imagine, determining if the organic foods you are buying are the right ones, you need to educate yourself on where to spend the money. The following is a list of the top organic foods that you should start to put in your grocery cart.

* Baby food – organic helps to protect your baby from the start, ensuring they get only the best

* Strawberries – buy them in season and you will notice the difference and don’t forget you can freeze them and enjoy them in the winter too

* Rice – this essential staple is full of pesticides so when possible buy organic and store in an air-tight container

* Peppers – all colours and packed with Vitamin C, that is until you add pesticides to the mix

* Corn – surprising? Well, considering the vast use of corn in our diets married with the fact that most of it is genetically modified consider switching to the organic variety

* Green Beans – with over 60 various pesticides used to grow these are pretty self explanatory

* Peaches – conventional grocery peaches can contain the highest rates of pesticides so stick with organic
