08/12/09: Hand washing cuts food poisoning

hand_washingThe number of reports of group food poisoning from June through November shrank 47 percent from the same period a year earlier, largely thanks to heightened hygiene awareness following the A(H1N1) flu outbreak, said the Korea Food and Drug Administration yesterday. A(H1N1) influenza, previously named “swine flu,” began spreading in April.

Group food poisoning refers to cases where at least two patients who are confirmed to have caught a food-related illness and experience similar symptoms after eating the same food.

Restaurants saw food poisoning cases drop from 195 to 96. Household cases dropped from 22 to 12. “Hand washing blocks germs causing food poisoning from reaching the body,” said the KFDA in a statement.

Korea has promoted washing hands “well and frequently” in recent months as part of preventive measures against the latest flu strain.

Under the pan-national “1830” hand-washing movement, people are encouraged to wash their hands for 30 seconds at least eight times in one day.
